As we have all heard, Governor Baldacci has proposed cutting all MaineCare programs by 10%. These cuts will greatly affect home and community based services that are provided to the elderly, mentally ill and physically disabled citizens of Maine. The Times Record, a newspaper in mid coast Maine has published an article that calls these cuts Penny Wise and Pound Foolish. The article can be viewed at http://www.timesrecord.com/articles/2010/02/06/opinion/editorials/doc4b6c695964b72510411808.txt
The message of this article is really that home and community based services save the state of Maine money. If home and community based services get cut, this will ultimately push people into more expensive settings, which will cost more money in the long run. We encourage people to contact their local legislatures to let them know that we need to preserve home and community based services. You can find your local representatives at www.maine.gov click on legislature and then click on contact us and click find your representative.
